And for the record, lush forests are exactly what the credits show. People walking through trees, fishing in ponds, chasing birds. All of which upon extinction would not be suddenly reborn anew. I also don't think everything is "all better" upon their return to Earth. Even as the end credits continue the story, it is hardly lush forests that are shown growing. If I had to sit down and define the film's message it would be "In order to truly live you must embrace and engage the world around you." So, we agree on the intended message of the film. Yet, you can't deny that ultimately technology saves man. Without the AXIOM, man was doomed, simple as that. It allowed them to let the earth "heal," (which is impossible in the way the film presents it) so that they could return and have a do-over of sorts. It definitely sends a subtle (and unintended) message of "well even if we screw it up so bad that it's unlivable, we'll just build a giant space hotel to camp out in until it gets better on its own.
