Thanks for your post. I think that more people would realize the difference they can make in the world by just having hope that they can make a difference. I think having hope is one of the most powerful things.

Ok. But are they alive and breathing? Yes. How did it happen? Technology. Just because they were imprisoned by technology doesn't mean it didn't save them. You cannot argue around the point that without technology mankind is toast. If you were dangling from a cliff and I came and pulled you to safety and then imprisoned you for ten years; even if you broke out of my prison you'd still have to admit that the reason you are alive today was because of me.

And for the record, lush forests are exactly what the credits show. People walking through trees, fishing in ponds, chasing birds. All of which upon extinction would not be suddenly reborn anew. Blue jay goes extinct, blue jay stays extinct.

Again though, you can argue that in the Axiom, humanity was imprisoned as much as it was saved. The humans on the Axiom have traded their humanity for their survival. They have paid a steep price for turning to technology for their salvation. I also don't think everything is "all better" upon their return to Earth. Even as the end credits continue the story, it is hardly lush forests that are shown growing. The Earth they return to, while able to support life is in no way the Earth as it was/is now.

Let me first re-state that I do not think that "technology will save us in the end" was the intended message of the film. If I had to sit down and define the film's message it would be "In order to truly live you must embrace and engage the world around you." So, we agree on the intended message of the film.

Yet, you can't deny that ultimately technology saves man. Without the AXIOM, man was doomed, simple as that. It allowed them to let the earth "heal," (which is impossible in the way the film presents it) so that they could return and have a do-over of sorts. It definitely sends a subtle (and unintended) message of "well even if we screw it up so bad that it's unlivable, we'll just build a giant space hotel to camp out in until it gets better on its own. No harm done."

Don't get me wrong. Solid movie. Loved the Wall-E character and it looked Pixar-phenomenal (can I coin the phrase Pixarnomenal?) as always. Just not as good as say Monsters, Inc. or Finding Nemo.

[...] muddy watersI watched a great interview tonight on PBS. Bill Moyers was interviewing Leila Fadel, a reporter currently working in Baghdad. I enjoyed it for two reasons. One, Leila is 26 and I’m really jealous of the work she gets to do. …Resonant Images - http://jonassink.wordpress.com [...]
